Stag Movies

The prehistory of modern pornography is the classical American stag film, a body of clandestine short pornographic films produced during the first two-thirds of the 20th century. While the exact corpus of the distinctive stag film remains unknown, scholars at the Kinsey Institute believe there are approximately 2000 films produced between 1915-1968.
Stag cinema is a form of hardcore film and is characterized as silent, usually filling a single reel or less, and was illegally made and exhibited because of censorship laws in America. Women were excluded from these private screenings that were shown in American "smoker" houses such as fraternities or other exclusive institutions. In Europe, films of the same kind were screened within brothels. The mode of reception of the all-male audience of stag films was raucous, collective sexual banter and sexual arousal.
Film historians describe stag films as a primitive form of cinema because they were produced by anonymous and amateur male artists who failed in achieving narrative coherence and continuity within their diegesis. Today, many of these films have been archived by the Kinsey Institute, however most are in a state of decay and have no copyright, real credits, or acknowledged authorship. The stag film era inevitably ended due to the beginnings of the sexual revolution in the fifties in combination with the new technologies of the post war era, such as 16mm, 8mm, and the Super 8.

Family Spirit (1940)
"Family Spirit", 1940s (or earlier) French hardcore stag film with emphasis on fetishistic whipping, spanking and lots of other stuff. The many explicit sex scenes had to be cut in order to keep this on the Archive. This film is part of a series I'm posting on vintage fetish films, not porn.

Story: A blond girl caught watching a couple having sex is harshly spanked and whipped. She gets revenge by having the brunette bound and whipped, then she has wild sex with the guy. However, the girls make up in the end via a strap-on session. With what is shown you can read between the lines.

Porn was old hat by the '40s. This is presented to document an early example (and one of the best) of all-out fetishism. That is, bondage and corporal punishment as a sexual element in film. Here, those wacky French were decades ahead of the rest of the world.

S&M Fetish Stag Film (1960)
Here is one of the best '60s underground fetish shorts (most are terrible). This stands out due to the fierce Latina dominatrix who resembles Tura Satana ("Faster, Pussycat, Kill Kill!") both in look and over-the-top intensity. She goes berserk after her mousey schoolgirl slave brings home a note from her teacher. Note the bizarre "bondage board". A unique bit of carpentry. The domme wails away on the girl like a maniac. Part 2
Part two of this unusually harsh '60s film loop. The crazed dominatrix really goes to town on her bound submissive. Looks like a nettles branch and some sort of plastic flogger at the end. The sub-girl breaks character and smiles a couple of times which sort of shatters the illusion. 

Three rare 1950s bondage fetish movies
Three short, obscure Irving Klaw films featuring the usual rope bondage and spanking of underwear-clad models. Filmed in a crude warehouse. No title cards identifying the performers. Could be raw footage that was never properly finished. Funny blooper: at 5:30 you can see the second cameraman on the left side of the frame. Last shot is a freeze-frame of Bettie Page in leopard bikini.

Lessons of the strap (1950)
Short stag reel, circa late-1950s. A woman's nightmare of being punished by a jealous girlfriend. No strap, just bondage and non-stop hand spanking. Similar to Irving Klaw's films and "Co-Ed Secrets" (also at this site). Part of a long series I'm doing on the history of fetish films.

Black girls (1960)
When two underwear-clad black girls fight over the latest copy of Ebony, you just know it's not going to end well. Hard to tell if this is a dominatrix and slave scenario or a lesbian couple into rough stuff. The submissive is repeatedly paddled, bound, slapped, and kicked. This is a bit more harsh than usual for its time. 

In the '60s, mainstream films totally ignored black women. Fetish films actually practiced equality by showing them dominating and frequently whupping white girls 

1960s Bondage-abduction fetish stag film
Short and sweet example of a late '60s BDSM loop shot on 8 or 16mm film. Features an especially beautiful and well-built blonde and some nice touches. Accessories include a dog collar, ball-gag, quirt (whip) and an Army belt as restraining device. 

Most of these '50s-'60s shorts are all-female and have a light tone I call "slumber party gone wrong". This tries, and fails, to be more hardcore and menacing by including a guy (we only see his hands), an abduction theme, and a quirt (used badly). Some really bad Method acting is also amusing. The girl wakes up (presumably she was drugged), looks around, takes a long pause, then lets out a big phony scream. Thankfully, we don't have to hear it on this silent reel.

60s Latex Mistress and Slave Girls, fetish stag film
Prime example of a late-1960s (non-porn) fetish stag reel. A latex-clad mistress punishes four slave girls with a rope flogger. Non-stop whipping and spanking action plus obligatory bondage. A bit more serious and consistent in tone than most of the semi-comic shorts in this sub-genre.

Black mistress spanking two white girls (1960)
In the '60s, only underground fetish films actually dared to depict total racial equality. In this case, a dominant black girl opens a can of whup-ass on two white submissives. This smiling ebony beauty is having too much fun spanking the crap out of her two bound captives. (Uncertain when to stop, she looks up at the director twice.) The tone is light, lacking menace. More like a slumber party gone wrong. There's a pillow fight and a classic "turnabout" ending. Whitey more or less wins in the end, but it's all in good fun. Note that all three are wearing go-go boots.
